If $$a \colon b = 2 \colon 3$$, $$b \colon c = 4 \colon 5$$ and $$a + c = 736$$, then the value of $$b$$ is
Making the value of $$b$$ common in both ratios gives $$a \colon b \colon c = 8 \colon 12 \colon 15$$. Then $$a + c$$ corresponds to $$8 + 15 = 23$$ parts, so one part is $$\frac{736}{23} = 32$$. Hence $$b = 12 \times 32 = 384$$.
