Question 103

A 280 metres long train, travelling at a uniform speed, crosses a platform in 60 seconds and a man standing on the platform in 20 seconds. What is the length of the platform ?

Let length of platform = $$l$$ metres

Let speed of train = $$x$$ m/s

Using, $$time = \frac{distance}{speed}$$

=> $$\frac{280}{x} = 20$$

=> $$x = \frac{280}{20} = 14$$ m/s

Time taken while crossing the platform,

=> $$\frac{280 + l}{14} = 60$$

=> $$280 + l = 60 \times 14 = 840$$

=> $$l = 840 - 280 = 560$$ metres
