Question 10

Let ABCD be a square. E, F, G, H be the mid points of its sides $$\overline{AB}$$, $$\overline{BC}$$, $$\overline{CD}$$, $$\overline{DA}$$ respectively. Let P, Q, R, S be the points of intersection of the line segments $$\overline{AF}$$, $$\overline{BG}$$, $$\overline{CH}$$, $$\overline{DE}$$ inside the square. The ratio of the areas $$\triangle PQRS \colon \triangle ABCD$$ is _________ (give the value of the ratio as a decimal)

Correct Answer: 0.2

Solution

Take the square of side 2. Each of the four lines has length $$\sqrt{5}$$, and the inner figure PQRS is a square. Its side is the distance between the parallel lines $$AF$$ and $$CH$$, which is $$\frac{2}{\sqrt{5}}$$, so its area is $$\frac{4}{5}$$ against the square's area 4. The ratio is $$1 \colon 5 = 0.2$$.
