A wire of length 88 cm was bent into the shape of a circle and then into a square. Which figure encloses more area and by how much? (Use $$\pi = \frac{22}{7}$$)
For the circle, $$2\pi r = 88$$ gives $$r = 14$$ cm, so its area is $$\frac{22}{7} \times 14^2 = 616\ \text{cm}^2$$. For the square, each side is $$\frac{88}{4} = 22$$ cm, so its area is $$484\ \text{cm}^2$$. The circle encloses more, by $$616 - 484 = 132\ \text{cm}^2$$.
