NIT CSE Cutoff 2026, JoSAA Opening & Closing Ranks

NIT CSE Cut-Off 2026

NIT CSE Cut-Off 2026 refers to the minimum JEE Main AIR that a candidate must secure to pursue B.Tech Computer Science Engineering course at NITs through JoSAA counseling rounds. The JEE Mains Cutoff 2026 plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for top branches like CSE across NITs. NIT CSE Cut-Off will be declared in the form of opening and closing ranks for respective NITs, categories and quotas after every round of JoSAA counseling. The process of JoSAA 2026 counseling is expected to commence in June 2026 following the declaration of JEE Main 2026 scores by NTA.

CSE is considered to have the lowest closing rank amongst all streams in terms of the number of seats allotted owing to its highly popular nature, excellent placements and demand among toppers. According to the analysis of JoSAA 2025 Round 6, the most difficult CSE cut-off was reported at NIT Trichy, where the closing rank was in the range 1400–1500 for OS (General Category).

JoSAA NIT CSE Cutoff 2026

JoSAA announces the NIT CSE cut-off in the form of opening and closing ranks after every counselling round. The opening rank refers to the highest rank among those seats that have been allotted in the first round, whereas the closing rank refers to the highest rank allotted in the last round of counselling (Round 6). The following table presents the JoSAA 2025 Round 6 (last round) CSE opening and closing ranks of some of the leading NITs in the categories of OS General and HS General.

Home State vs Other State

Under the JoSAA policy, each NIT keeps 50% seats reserved for the HS quota, i.e., students who have cleared Class 12 exams from that particular state. The remaining 50% seats are allotted to OS/All-India candidates. It makes a massive difference to the cut-off ranks in practice.

For most NITs, the closing rank under the HS quota is relatively higher (lesser competitive) compared to the OS closing rank, making life easier for students of home states. For instance, in the case of NIT Trichy's CSE branch, in JoSAA 2025 Round 6, the General category closing rank for OS quota was approximately 1400-1500, whereas the HS quota closing rank was around 4500, a huge difference of over 3,000 ranks.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 NITs such as NIT Hamirpur provide even more relaxation, and the rank relaxation can go up to 10,000 to 15,000 under the HS quota. Candidates must remember to check the HS and OS quotas while choosing NITs for JoSAA selections.

NIT CSE Category-wise Cutoff

There is a wide variation in the JoSAA NIT CSE cut off across different reservation categories. Open category candidates have to compete most toughly, and then comes EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST category candidates in that order. Below is the table which gives closing rank across different reservation categories for admission in CSE program at top NITs from JoSAA 2025 Round 6 for OS quota.

The candidates of general category must secure percentile scores of approximately 99.3-99.7 for the first three NITs (Trichy, Warangal, and Surathkal) in the OS quota. On the other hand, the OBC-NCL candidates usually secure percentile scores of nearly 99.2+ for the top NITs. The percentile required for the SC/ST category candidates is comparatively lower.

NIT CSE Previous Year's Cut-off Analysis

A trend analysis of NIT CSE cut off over the last three years suggests that there has been an upward trend in the closing ranks for the top NITs on account of year-by-year increasing number of applicants applying to join the CSE discipline. The following table shows the comparison of closing ranks of JoSAA round-wise for General OS Category from 2023 to 2025.

Key observations from the trend analysis are noted below.

NIT Trichy CSE has consistently been ranked top in the cut-off point amongst all NITs, it is expected at around 1300-1500 in 2026.

They are followed closely by NIT Surathkal and NIT Warangal whose cut-offs are under 2,500 in the case of General OS.

Overall, cutoffs have increased across all Tier 1 NITs; this means that CSE is more difficult to be admitted to.

Among newer NITs like NIT Mizoram and NIT Nagaland, the easiest cut-off for CSE is available; their cut-offs for the general category are more than 1,50,000.

NIT CSE Opening and Closing Rank 2026

NIT CSE opening & closing ranks 2026 shall be announced by JoSAA on josaa.nic.in upon conclusion of each counselling round. JoSAA counselling for 2026 is set to kick off in June 2026 after the release of JEE Main 2026 result. Until that time, candidates are advised to refer Round 6 2025 data for reliable guidance.

Opening rank refers to the lowest (or best) rank that obtained an allocation in Round 1. It signifies the earliest mover, i.e., students who scored exceptionally well. Closing rank is the highest rank allocated in the last round and, therefore, always quoted when assessing competitiveness of the cut-off. In the case of some top-notch NITs such as NIT Trichy, the opening rank for CSE (General OS) stood at under 1000 in JoSAA 2025. It is important to state that the closing rank will increase (and hence be less competitive) from Round 1 to Round 6 owing to withdrawals, floats, and upgrades of allocations.

Top NITs CSE Cut-Off 2026

The following top NITs consistently record the lowest (most competitive) CSE cutoffs year after year. Based on JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks and historical trends, here is a snapshot of what candidates can expect in 2026.

NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy): The toughest NIT CSE seat in India. The General closing rank in JoSAA 2025 was in the range of 1400-1500. Candidates typically need around 99.5-99.7 percentile. NIT Trichy CSE is known for exceptional placements and consistently attracts the highest-scoring JEE Main candidates.

NIT Karnataka, Surathkal: A close second, with a General OS closing rank in the range of 2300-2500 in JoSAA 2025 Round 6. Located in coastal Karnataka, it is especially competitive for candidates from outside Karnataka.

NIT Warangal: With a General OS closing rank in the range of 2400-2500 in JoSAA 2025 final round, NIT Warangal CSE is among the top three. The institute has strong industry connections and placement records, keeping demand high.

NIT Calicut: Ranks among Tier 1 NITs with a General OS closing rank in the range of 5000-5500. A strong choice for CSE aspirants in the 97 to 99 percentile range.

NIT Rourkela: Closing rank for CSE (General OS) was in the range of 3300-3500 in JoSAA 2025 final round. Offers excellent research facilities and placements.

MNIT Jaipur and NIT Delhi: Both are strong Tier 2 options with CSE closing ranks in the 7000 t0 7500 range for General OS candidates.

Factors Affecting NIT CSE Cut-Off 2026

Several interconnected factors influence how the NIT CSE cutoff shifts from year to year. Understanding these can help candidates make better-informed decisions during JoSAA choice filling.

Total JEE Main Applicants: The more registered candidates, the more direct competition results, which is currently pushing the closing ranks to lower (more difficult) values. In the JEE Main 2025, a total of more than 13 lakh candidates were registered in the two sessions.

JEE Main Exam Difficulty: A more difficult paper causes the distribution of scores to be concentrated towards the upper end, and can relax cutoffs, whereas an easier paper will cause cutoffs to be stricter.

JoSAA Seat Matrix: The addition of seats or new branches (including the addition of AI and Data Science to NIT Surathkal and NIT Warangal in recent years) lures away high-rankers to CSE and may end up raising or lowering cutoffs based on aggregate interest.

Institute Reputation and Placement Records: NITs with higher placement record can get more attractive candidates who are higher-ranked resulting in tougher cutoffs. This is the reason why NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal are always the most competitive.

Home State vs Other State Quota: Home state candidates are allowed to hold 50% of the seats. This forms a two cutoff system in which the applicants of HS are generally less competitive than those of OS in most NITs.

JoSAA Counselling Behaviour: The float, slide, and withdraw options of the candidates in the rounds influence the movement of the seats in the different rounds. The withdrawals and upgrades open up seats which change the closing ranks in subsequent rounds.

Introduction of New Branches: New tech-oriented programmes such as CSE (AI), Data Science, or Cybersecurity can replace some of the demand that would be channeled towards the traditional CSE when added to popular NITs.

NIT CSE Cut-Off 2026: Conclusion

NIT CSE Cut-Off 2026 plays a crucial role in determining admission chances for candidates aiming to secure a seat in top NITs. With increasing competition and rising demand for Computer Science Engineering, the closing ranks continue to become more competitive every year. Candidates must carefully analyze JoSAA opening and closing ranks, category-wise trends, and HS vs OS differences to make informed choices during counselling.

Based on previous year trends, securing a rank under 2500 significantly improves chances for Tier 1 NITs, while ranks up to 6000 can still fetch good options in Tier 2 institutes. Aspirants are advised to use this data strategically while filling choices in JoSAA 2026 to maximize their chances of admission into preferred NITs and CSE branches.
