JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2027, Documents, Age Limit

Every year, millions of engineering aspirants apply for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) through JEE Advanced. Clearing JEE Main alone does not suffice. Candidates must also satisfy the eligibility conditions set by the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Most serious aspirants start with a structured JEE online coaching programme well in advance to ensure they clear both the cutoff and the board requirements. The eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2027 have not been published officially yet. However, until the official brochure is released, the criteria for JEE Advanced 2026 serve as a reliable reference, as they do not change significantly year on year. The key parameters are summarised below.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2027

The following table provides a precise summary of all verified eligibility requirements. Each parameter is explained in detail in the sections below.

Eligibility Parameter

Important Points Regarding Age Limit

  • The date of birth recorded in the Class 10 certificate is generally treated as final.
  • SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a 5-year age relaxation.
  • OBC-NCL and EWS candidates do not receive age relaxation and share the General category cutoff.
  • Incorrect date of birth information can result in cancellation of candidature.
  • Candidates must carefully verify all personal details before submitting the application form.

JEE Advanced 2027 Qualification Criteria

The qualification criteria include both the JEE Main performance threshold and the Class 12 board performance requirement. Candidates must meet both.

1. JEE Main Qualification Requirement

Candidates cannot register directly for JEE Advanced. They must first appear in JEE Main 2027 Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.) and secure a rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates across all categories.

Paper Required

Registration for JEE Advanced

Allowed only after qualifying shortlist

2. Class 12 Qualification Requirement

Candidates must have appeared in Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination with the following mandatory subjects:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics

3. Class 12 Minimum Marks Requirement (75% / Top 20 Percentile)

Passing Class 12 with PCM subjects alone is not sufficient for IIT admission. Candidates must also meet one of the following performance thresholds:

Criterion

Requirement

Aggregate Marks (General/OBC-NCL/EWS)

Minimum 75% in Class 12 board examination

Aggregate Marks (SC/ST/PwD)

Minimum 65% in Class 12 board examination

Alternative (all categories)

Top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective board

A candidate who does not achieve the 75% aggregate threshold (65% for SC/ST/PwD) may still be eligible if their aggregate score falls within the Top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their board and category. Either condition independently satisfies the board performance requirement.

4. How the 75% Aggregate Is Calculated (5-Subject Rule)

The 75% aggregate (or 65% for reserved categories) is calculated using a specific set of 5 subjects. Candidates must be aware of this rule to accurately assess their eligibility:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Language: the higher-scoring language if the candidate took two languages
  • Fifth subject: the subject with the highest marks from the remaining subjects

Only these 5 subjects are used to compute the aggregate for eligibility purposes. Marks in additional subjects are not included in this calculation. Candidates who are working to strengthen their scores across these subjects will find that good JEE study material covering all three core sciences is indispensable at this stage.

5. Equivalent Qualifying Examinations

The following examinations are generally treated as equivalent to Class 12:

Equivalent Examination

Final examination of the 10+2 system

Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination

Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by NIOS

Examination recognised by AIU as equivalent to Class 12

Any recognised board examination equivalent to Class 12

6. Previous IIT Admission Rule

Candidates who have previously been admitted to an IIT may face eligibility restrictions. The key conditions are as follows:

Situation

Eligibility Impact

Previously accepted IIT seat through JoSAA

Not eligible (unless withdrew before final seat allocation round)

Continued studies in IIT

Restrictions apply

Withdrew before final seat allocation

May still be eligible

How Many Attempts Are Allowed for JEE Advanced?

The number of attempts for JEE Advanced is strictly controlled by the Joint Admission Board. As per the latest eligibility guidelines, a candidate is allowed a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years.

JEE Advanced Attempt Limit: Example

Year

Attempt

Status

2027

First Attempt

Eligible

2028

Second Attempt

Eligible

2029

Third Attempt

Why Does JAB Impose an Attempt Limit?

  • To maintain fair competition among all aspirants.
  • To provide equal opportunities to fresh and repeating candidates alike.
  • To ensure uniform admission standards across IITs.
  • To streamline the IIT admission process efficiently.

Students planning to take a drop year must carefully account for this rule. If 2027 is a candidate's first attempt, they have exactly one more chance in 2028 and will not be eligible in 2029 or beyond.

Can Class 12 Appearing Students Apply for JEE Advanced 2027?

Yes. Class 12 appearing students are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced 2027, provided they satisfy all other eligibility criteria. However, there are strict rules regarding when the candidate first appeared for their Class 12 boards.

First Board Appearance Rule

First Board Appearance Year

Eligibility for JEE Advanced 2027

2027 (current year)

Eligible

2026 (one year prior)

Eligible

2025 or earlier

NOT Eligible

This rule is strictly enforced. A candidate whose first Class 12 board appearance was in 2025 or any earlier year is NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2027, even if they are reappearing to improve their board score or have taken a drop year.

Conditions for Appearing Class 12 Students

  • Must qualify JEE Main 2027 and be among the top 2,50,000 shortlisted candidates.
  • Must not exceed the prescribed age limit (born on or after October 1, 2002 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS).
  • Must be appearing in Class 12 for the first time in 2026 or 2027.
  • Must not have exceeded the maximum number of JEE Advanced attempts.

Should Class 12 Students Attempt JEE Advanced?

Students aiming for IIT admission should make every effort to attempt JEE Advanced while fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Early and thorough preparation significantly improves the chances of securing a good rank. Practising a wide variety of JEE questions - especially from previous years - is one of the most reliable ways to build the speed and accuracy needed on exam day.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2027: Conclusion

Understanding the JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2027 is essential before beginning the registration process. Candidates must satisfy the expected age requirement, qualify for JEE Main Paper 1, remain within the top 2,50,000 candidates and meet the Class 12 marks or top 20 percentile condition. They must also follow the two-attempt rule and the prescribed first Class 12 appearance requirement.

The official JEE Advanced 2027 information brochure has not yet been released, so candidates should treat the current conditions as expected criteria based on the previous admission cycle. Aspirants should keep their academic records, identity documents and valid category certificates ready and verify every requirement after the official notification is published.
