In Direct to indirect speech, when should we use "enquired"?. For example: The traveller said to the peasant, " Can you tell me the way to the nearest inn ?" Ans: The traveller asked the peasant if he could tell him the way to the nearest inn. (Here, the traveller is actually enquiring then why cannot we use "enquired" instead of "asked" ?)
