There is no one easy way to solve these kind of problems. Only thing you can use to solve these questions is logic. What I would recommend is to solve as many different types of such questions as possible. When it comes to games and tournaments, tabulating the data helps a lot. So a general approach would be as follows:
1) Write down the information in a table format
2) If there is missing or incomplete data, make different versions of the table. Usually, all alternate versions except the correct one will prove to be infeasible as we try to fit in the remaining data
3) If the game is a knockout, draw a tree structure with converging branches
