The most important thing to be kept in mind while solving cloze test is the context of the paragraph. You have to understand what the author is trying to convey through the paragraph, what is the tone of the paragraph etc. Also, you have to be alert to the words beings used before and after the blank, prepositions, tense of the sentence etc. All these will help you select the correct answer. A good vocabulary definitely helps.
