In each question below are given two statements followed by four conclusions numbered I, II, III and IV. You have to take the two given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follow from the two given statements disregarding commonly known facts.

Question 95

Statements:
1. Some pistols are guns.
2. Some pistols are swords
Conclusions :

I. Some guns are swords.
II. No sword is a gun.
III. Every pistol is either gun or sword.
IV. Some pistols are neither gun nor sword

Solution

Following are the possible conclusion of 'Some pistols are guns': 'Some pistols are guns, and vice versa', 'All pistols are guns, and vice versa', 'All pistols are guns, and not vice versa'.

Following are the possible conclusions of 'Some pistols are swords': 'Some pistols are swords, and vice versa', 'All pistols are swords, and vice versa', 'All pistols are swords, and not vice versa'.

We shall try to find a scenario when the options won't hold true, and if there is an option which is always true, that is a valid conclusion.

1. Some guns are swords: This can be a valid conclusion in case where there is an intersection between guns and swords.

2. No gun is a sword: This can be a valid conclusion where there is no intersection between the two sets.

However, we shall note that the two conclusions discussed above cannot happen simultaneously but one of them will definitely occur.

3.  Every pistol is either gun or sword: This can be negated as there is nothing to state that each of the pistol definitely comes under one other set.

4. Some pistols are neither gun nor sword: This can be negated as there is nothing to state that there are pistols that fall out of the range of the other two sets. There can be an instance when every pistol is either gun or sword.
