Question 89

Five vegetables are placed in a row in a grocery store. Carrot is at the extreme left and adjacent to Cucumber. Tomato and Cucumber are not placed together. Onion and Capsicum are placed together but Onion is not next to Tomato. Which of the vegetables are at the extreme ends?

1. Carrot and Tomato
2. Carrot and Onion
3. Cucumber and Capsicum
4. Capsicum and Tomato

Solution

Carrot is at the extreme left and adjacent to Cucumber. The arrangement is shown below

Carrot, Cucumber, _ , _ , _

Tomato and Cucumber are not placed together. So tomato should not be at third position. Tomato will be at either fourth or fifth position. The two possibilities are shown below

Carrot, Cucumber, _ , Tomato , _ .....(1)

Carrot, Cucumber, _ , _ , Tomato .....(2)

Onion and Capsicum are placed together but Onion is not next to Tomato. Onion and Capsicum should be together which is not possible in possibility(1). Hence possibility(1) is eliminated. Since Onion is not next to Tomato, Onion should be placed at third position and Capsicum at fourth in the possibility(2). Therefore, the final arrangement is

Carrot, Cucumber, Onion, Capsicum, Tomato

$$\therefore\ $$Carrot and Tomato are at the extreme ends.
