It’s important to remember that there’s no shortcut to improving comprehension and verbal ability skills. The best approach is consistent reading and practice. Everyone has their own pace when it comes to reading comprehension (RC), and there’s always room for improvement.
Ideally, you should be able to read the entire passage once in 3-4 minutes, comprehending most of it, and then spend the next 3-5 minutes answering the questions. The total time for a complete RC set should be around 7-9 minutes.
If you’re unable to complete the passage within 5 minutes, consider practising reading strategies to increase your words per minute count. For comprehension, aim to understand the basic structure and themes of the passage, with a rough idea of where each topic is discussed.
Here are some strategies to tackle RC passages effectively:
Expand Your Vocabulary: Make it a habit to learn new words daily and review them regularly to build your vocabulary.
Regular Practice: Dedicate time each day to read challenging texts from various sources. This will not only improve your comprehension skills but also expose you to different writing styles and structures.
Identify Main Ideas: When tackling RC passages, focus on identifying the main ideas. Skim through the passage quickly to get an overview, then scan for specific details that relate to the questions asked.
Active Engagement: Engage with the text by asking yourself questions as you read. Try to anticipate the author’s arguments and think critically about the content.
Time Management: Practice reading passages under timed conditions to improve your speed and efficiency. Prioritize questions based on difficulty and allocate time accordingly.
In the new exam pattern, you can expect to spend 3-4 minutes for the first reading of an RC and then a further 3-4 minutes for the questions. You should be attempting 3 RCs and all the verbal questions, at least the TITA ones. If you are very confident in RCs and not so much in VA, you can try to attempt the 4 RCs in 32-35 minutes and quickly go through the TITA VA questions.
After completing practice passages or mock tests, review your mistakes and understand why you got certain questions wrong. By incorporating these strategies into your study routine and practising regularly, you can enhance your RC skills. With enough practice, you should be able to eliminate options correctly.
When you find yourself torn between two answer choices in a reading comprehension question, there are several strategies to help you make a decision:
First, carefully analyze the question and review the relevant portion of the passage, looking for explicit information that supports or refutes each option. Consider the main theme and tone of the passage, choosing the option that aligns better with the central argument and author’s attitude. Apply logical reasoning and eliminate the option that seems less plausible or does not fit well with the context. Lastly, reevaluate the remaining options and consider any nuances or differences that may help you make a more informed decision. Practice active reading and critical thinking to improve your ability to eliminate between two options and select the most accurate answer.
Again, emphasizing the importance of practice, make sure that you practice at least one RC a day, if not more, and that you read different types of articles, as that will help you get acquainted with different styles of writing. With consistent effort and practice, you’ll see improvement over time. Good luck!
I hope this helps.
