What is CAT Percentile?

CAT percentile is a metric used by premier institutions like IIMs and other top B-schools in India to evaluate the relative performance of MBA aspirants who have taken the CAT Exam. For instance, if a candidate scores in the 90th percentile, it indicates that they have outperformed 90% of other test-takers. This percentile is crucial as MBA institutes utilize it to shortlist candidates for further selection stages, which typically involve the Written Ability Test (WAT) & Group Discussion-Personal Interview (GD-PI) round. The admission process for IIMs in 2024 would be based on three main criteria: CAT score, WAT/GD-PI performance, and academic & work profile. Once the CAT response sheet is out, students can calculate their raw score and predict their percentile using CAT Score Calculator.

How is the CAT Percentile calculated?

The CAT percentile is determined using the Equipercentile method, which involves transforming each candidate's raw scores into a standardized scale relative to all test takers in a particular year. This percentile score represents the percentage of candidates who scored lower than a specific score, ranging from 0 to 100.

Category-Specific Percentile Requirements

IIMs often specify percentile cut-offs for different categories of candidates, such as General, SC, ST, OBC, etc. The selection process for admission to IIMs takes into consideration various factors, including the applicant's category (General/EWS/OBC/SC/ST) and gender (Male/Female), with an aim to promote diversity. This may result in different chances of receiving a call for candidates based on their category and gender. These category-wise cutoffs aim to ensure equitable representation and opportunities for candidates from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds.

Weightage of 10th, 12th, Undergraduate score & Work experience

The weightage assigned to academic qualifications differs across various IIMs and other prominent business schools. By considering your performance in Class 10th, Class 12th, undergraduate studies, and work experience, you can gain a better understanding of the likelihood of receiving admission calls from different IIMs. The list of business schools we are examining includes IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA), IIM Bangalore (IIMB), IIM Calcutta (IIMC), IIM Indore (IIMI), IIM Lucknow (IIML), the newer IIMs, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Management Development Institute (MDI), National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), and SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SP Jain).

Cutoffs for the Top B-schools accepting the CAT score

The cutoff requirements for different business schools vary based on individual profiles. When aiming for the IIMs, receiving a call depends on both the CAT cutoffs and your profile. However, renowned Non-IIM institutions like FMS Delhi and MDI place greater emphasis on the entrance test score (CAT) and assign less weightage to academic performance. Therefore, the cutoffs for these non-IIM business schools are predominantly determined by the entrance test score. It is advisable to refer to the respective cutoffs of the desired MBA colleges for accurate information. You can check out the cutoffs of the top MBA colleges here
