Question 95

The line passing through the point (5,a) and point (4,3) is perpendicular to the line x - 6y = 8. What is the value of 'a'?

Solution

Slope of line x - 6y = 8 :

= $$\frac{-1}{-6} = \frac{1}{6}$$

Slope of line passing through the point (5,a) and point (4,3) = $$\frac{3-a}{4-5} = (a-3)$$

Product of slopes of two perpendicular lines is -1

=> $$(a-3) \times \frac{1}{6}=-1$$

=> $$a-3=-6$$

=> $$a=-6+3=-3$$

=> Ans - (A)
