Question 71

The number of students studying subjects A, B and C in a school are in the proportion 12 : 15 : 16. There is a proposal to increase the number of students studying A, B and C, respectively by 50%, 20% and 50%. What will be the new proportion of the number of students studying A, B and C?

Solution

The number of students studying subjects A, B and C in a school are in the proportion 12 : 15 : 16.

Let's assume the number of students studying subjects A, B and C in a school are 12y, 15y and 16y respectively.

There is a proposal to increase the number of students studying A, B and C, respectively by 50%, 20% and 50%.

number of students studying subjects A after increase = 12y of (100+50)%

= 12y of 150%

= 18y

number of students studying subjects B after increase = 15y of (100+20)%

= 15y of 120%

= 18y

number of students studying subjects C after increase = 16y of (100+50)%

= 16y of 150%

= 24y

The new proportion of the number of students studying A, B and C = 18y : 18y : 24y

= 3 : 3 : 4
