Two persons contested an election of Parliament. The winning candidate secured 57% of the total votes polled and won by a majority of 42,000 votes. The number of total votes polled is

Solution

Let number of total votes polled = $$100x$$

Votes secured by winning candidate = $$\frac{57}{100}\times100x=57x$$

=> Votes secured by losing candidate = $$100x-57x=43x$$

According to ques, => $$57x-43x=42,000$$

=> $$x=\frac{42,000}{14}=3,000$$

$$\therefore$$ Total votes polled = $$100\times3,000=3,00,000$$

=> Ans - (D)
