In an examination, a student has to secure 35% of the maximum marks to pass. One student got 70 marks and failed by 70 marks. The maximum marks in the examination are

Let the total marks of the exam be x
For passing the exam 35% of marks are required
So 0.35x is the passing mark
Given the person got 70 and failed by 70 so the pass marks are 70+70=140
Therefore 0.35x=140
x=400
