Question 57

The average of nine numbers is 20. If two of these numbers are removed, then the average becomes 18. What is the sum of the two numbers that are removed?

Solution

The average of nine numbers is 20.

Sum of nine numbers = $$20\times9$$ = 180    Eq.(i)

If two of these numbers are removed, then the average becomes 18.

Sum of remaining seven numbers = $$18\times7$$ = 126    Eq.(ii)

Sum of the two numbers that are removed = Eq.(i)-Eq.(ii)

= 180-126

= 54
