Question 33

Given below are two statements :
Statement I : SO$$_2$$ and H$$_2$$O both possess V-shaped structure
Statement II : The bond angle of SO$$_2$$ is less than that of H$$_2$$O.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Statement I: SO₂ and H₂O both have V-shaped (bent) structures.

SO₂: Central S atom has 2 bond pairs + 1 lone pair → V-shaped ✓

H₂O: Central O atom has 2 bond pairs + 2 lone pairs → V-shaped ✓

Statement I is correct.

Statement II: The bond angle of SO₂ is less than that of H₂O.

SO₂ bond angle ≈ 119° (sp² hybridization with one lone pair)

H₂O bond angle ≈ 104.5° (sp³ hybridization with two lone pairs)

Actually, SO₂ has a LARGER bond angle than H₂O. So Statement II is incorrect.

Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.

This matches option 4.
