Question 29

The batting average for 40 innings of a cricket player is 50 runs. His highest score exceeds his lowest score by 172 runs, If these twoinnings are excluded, the average of the remaining 38 innings is 48 runs. The highest score of the player is

Solution

let the score of lowest inning =  x

score of highest inning = x+172

avg of 38 innings = 48

total score of 38 innings = $$48\times 38$$ = 1824

total score of 40 innings = $$50\times 40$$= 2000

x+x+172 = 2000 - 1824

2x+172 = 176

2x= 4

x=2

highest score of the player = 172+2 = 174
