Question 86

The sentences given below, when properly sequenced, form a coherent paragraph. Each sentence is labelled with a number. Decide on the most logical order and enter the sequence of numbers in the space provided.

1. Farmers, however, especially during the peak farming season, ignore the warnings of the weather forecast.
2. People from some states of India have demanded that families of those who have been killed by lightning strikes should receive compensation.
3. The Minister for Disaster Management announced that over 2800 people have died after being struck by a lightning last year.
4. The Minister responded that pamphlets on the dangers of lightning and precautions to be taken are being distributed in villages.

Correct Answer: 3241

Sentences 1 and 4 both talk about the fact that not following guidelines and precautions for natural disasters can be dangerous. We can infer that the discussion around lightning should precede sentences 1 and 4 (especially since sentence 1 is an extension of sentence 4 (pamphlets are being distributed especially because farmers ignore warnings ) and sentence 4 cannot come before sentence 3 (Minister first makes an announcement and only then responds)), and sentence 3 should introduce the discussion. In essence, the following points are to be noted:

(a) Sentence 3 is the opening sentence.
(b) Sentence 1 should immediately follow sentence 4.

This leaves us with only two possibilities for the arrangement, either 3412 or 3241. Looking at sentences 2 and 4, we realise that the 'response' talked about in sentence 4 should be the response to the 'people from some states of India' mentioned in sentence 2. Sentence 4 should, therefore, immediately follow sentence 2.

This leaves us with only one good choice, 3241, which is the correct answer.
