Question 80

One of the statements below contains a word used incorrectly or inappropriately. Choose the option which has the incorrect or inappropriate usage of the word.

All four sentences have the word "train" in common. The word "train" can have multiple meanings depending on the context; it may refer to a locomotive vehicle or to teaching someone to do something. We look at each option one by one to identify the sentence where the word has been used incorrectly.

Option A:[The sound of laughter and loud music from the neighbourʼs house disturbed his train of thought as he was writing his farewell speech.] uses "train " correctly, referring to the way in which someone reaches a conclusion.

Option B: [My friend has picked up a stray dog from the street and is now looking for somebody to train and domesticate the animal.] also uses the word "train" correctly. Here, "train" refers to teaching skills or obedience to the stray animal.

Option C: [If you really want to see the landscape and the scenic countryside, it is better to take a train or go by road, rather than by plane.] Here," train" refers to the locomotive, which is also a correct usage of the word.

Option D:[By following the train of blood on the platform, the police located the body of a young woman who had been brutally stabbed.]Here, the word "train" is misused. While "train" can be used metaphorically to mean "a series or sequence," its application to a blood trail is biologically and linguistically inappropriate. The correct term would be "trail of blood."

The correct choice in this case is therefore option D.
