For three numbers, the ratio of the first and the second numbers is 2 : 3 and that of the second and the third number is 4 : 5. If the sum of the three numbers is 140, then what is the second number?

Solution

first and second ratio =2:3

second and third ratio=  4:5

Second no. Ratio should be equal is both the case 

To equal both the case multiply with 4and 3 respectively

$$2:3\times 4$$ =8:12

$$4:5\times 3$$=12:15

ATQ

sum of three =140

8x+12x+15x=140

35x= 140

x = 4

Second no. = $$12\times4$$

                    = 48
