Question 65

Two numbers are, respectively, 20% and 10% more than a third number. The ratio of the first number to the second number, is:

Solution

Let's assume the third number is 'z'.

Two numbers are, respectively, 20% and 10% more than a third number.

First number = z of (100+20)%

= z of 120%

= $$z\times\frac{120}{100}$$

= 1.2z    Eq.(i)

Second number = z of (100+10)%

= z of 110%

= $$z\times\frac{110}{100}$$

= 1.1z    Eq.(ii)

The ratio of the first number to the second number = Eq.(i) : Eq.(ii)

= 1.2z : 1.1z

= 12 : 11
