Question 65

The average of seven consecutive even numbers is 12. If the next even number is also considered, then what will be the new average?

Solution

Let's assume the first number of the sequence is 'y'.

So the seven consecutive even numbers will be y, (y+2), (y+4), (y+6), (y+8), (y+10), (y+12).

The average of seven consecutive even numbers is 12.

$$\frac{y+(y+2)+(y+4)+(y+6)+(y+8)+(y+10)+(y+12)}{7}\ =\ 12$$

$$y+(y+2)+(y+4)+(y+6)+(y+8)+(y+10)+(y+12)\ =\ 84$$

7y+42=84

7y = 84-42

7y = 42

y = 6

If the next even number is also considered.

So the eight consecutive even numbers will be 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.

New average (eight consecutive even numbers) = $$\frac{6+8+10+12+14+16+18+20}{8}$$

= $$\frac{104}{8}$$

= 13
