The average of 20 numbers is calculated as 35. It is discovered later on that while calculating the average, one number, namely 85, was read as 45. The correct average is

Solution

Average of 20 numbers = 35

=> Sum of 20 numbers = $$20 \times 35=700$$

Now, adding 85 instead of 45

=> Correct sum = $$700-45+85=740$$

$$\therefore$$ Correct mean = $$\frac{740}{20}=37$$
