The average of 8 numbers is 12.

Sum of 8 numbers initially = $$12\times8$$ = 96

If a number Y is added to each of these 8 numbers, then the average becomes 16.

$$\frac{96+8\times\ Y}{8}\ =\ 16$$

$$12+Y\ =\ 16$$

$$Y\ =16-12$$

Y = 4
