Question 57

The first and second numbers are 32% and 48% more than the third number. What percentage (correct to two decimal places) is the second number of the first?

Solution

The first and second numbers are 32% and 48% more than the third number.

Let's assume the third number is 'c'.

first number = (100+32)% of c

first number = 132% of c = 1.32c    Eq.(i)

second number = (100+48)% of c

second number = 148% of c = 1.48c    Eq.(ii)

percentage = $$\frac{Eq.\left(ii\right)}{Eq.\left(i\right)}\times100$$

= $$\frac{1.48c}{1.32c}\times100$$

= $$\frac{14800}{132}$$

= 112.12%
