Question 57

In an exam, A gets 20% less than the passing marks and B gets 20% more than passing marks. If the sum of marks obtained by A and B is equal to maximum marks, what is the ratio of passing marks to maximum marks respectively?

Solution

let k be the passing marks

and 100 be the maximum marks

Given that A  scored 20% less than passing marks

=> A= 0.8k

given that B has scored 20% more than passing marks

=> B= 1.2k

sum of marks of A and B is maximum marks '

so 0.8k+1.2k=100

2k=100

k=50

so ratio of passing marks to maximum marks is 50:100

=> 1:2
