Question 53

The ratio(by volume) of milk and water in a mixture is 2 : 1. If we add 12 litres of water in the mixture, then the ratio of milk and water becomes 4 : 3. What is the quantity of water in the new mixture?

The ratio(by volume) of milk and water in a mixture is 2 : 1.

After adding 12 litres of water

New ratio becomes =4:3

 the ratio of milk before and after adding water is same

To equalise the mike ratio before and after , multiply 2:1 with 2

=4:2

Now water ratio is changed ,(4:3)-(4:2)

1 = 12 lit

Quantity of water in new mixture= 3×12

                                                 = 36 litres
