A work that could be completed in 10 days was completed in 8 days as 5 more men joined at the start of work. What was the total number of men before the 5 men joined?

Solution

Let's assume the number of men working initially is 'y'.

$$men_1\times\ days_1\ =\ men_2\times\ days_2$$

$$y\times10\ =\ \left(y+5\right)\times8$$

$$y\times5\ =\ \left(y+5\right)\times4$$
5y = 4y+20

5y-4y = 20

y = 20

the total number of men before the 5 men joined is 20.
