Question 5

A body weight $$W$$, is projected vertically upwards from earth's surface to reach a height above the earth which is equal to nine times the radius of earth. The weight of the body at that height will be:

A body of weight $$W$$ is at a height equal to 9 times the radius of earth ($$h = 9R$$).

Gravitational acceleration at height $$h$$.

$$g' = \frac{gR^2}{(R + h)^2} = \frac{gR^2}{(R + 9R)^2} = \frac{gR^2}{(10R)^2} = \frac{g}{100}$$

Weight at that height.

$$W' = mg' = \frac{mg}{100} = \frac{W}{100}$$

The answer is Option B: $$\frac{W}{100}$$.
