Question 39

Read the given statements and conclusions carefully. Assuming that the information given in the statements is true, even if it appears to be at variance with commonly known facts, decide which of the given conclusions logically follow(s) from the statements.

Statements:
I. No X is L.
II. All M are X.

Conclusions:
I. No L is X.
II. No L is M.
III. All M are L.

Solution

Conclusion: I. No L is X.

As per the above given Venn diagram, there is a completely negative relationship between 'L' and 'X'. So the given conclusion follows.

Conclusion: II. No L is M.

As per the above given Venn diagram, we know that 'no X is L' and 'all M are X'. So the given conclusion follows.

Conclusion: III. All M are L.

In the above conclusion, we have concluded that there is a completely negative relationship between 'M' and 'L'. Then the relation of 'all' will not be true. So the given conclusion does not follow.

Hence only conclusions I and II follow.
