Question 38

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: A mixture of chloroform and aniline can be separated by simple distillation.
Statement II: When separating aniline from a mixture of aniline and water by steam distillation aniline boils below its boiling point.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Solution

Statement I: A mixture of chloroform and aniline can be separated by simple distillation. Chloroform has a boiling point of about 61°C, while aniline has a boiling point of about 184°C. Since the difference in boiling points is very large (more than 120°C) and they do not form an azeotrope, they can easily be separated by simple distillation. Statement I is true.

Statement II: When separating aniline from a mixture of aniline and water by steam distillation, aniline boils below its boiling point. In steam distillation, the mixture of immiscible liquids (aniline and water) boils when the sum of their individual vapor pressures equals the atmospheric pressure. This happens at a temperature lower than the boiling point of either component. Since aniline normally boils at 184°C, during steam distillation it distils over at a temperature below 100°C, which is well below its normal boiling point. Statement II is true.

Therefore, both Statement I and Statement II are true.
