In each of the following questions, a series is given with one term missing. Choose the correct alternative from the given ones that will complete the series.

5, 11, 21, 43, 85, ?

Solution

Let the missing number be y

here the given sequence is 5, 11, 21, 43, 85, y

11 = 5 x 2 + 1

21 = 11 x 2 - 1

43 = 21 x 2 + 1

85 = 43 x 2 -1

So the pattern is that next term is twice of previous term +1 for digits at even places and Twice the previous term - 1 for numbers at odd places , hence

y = 85 x 2 +1 = 170 +1 = 171
