Question 126

16 times X is equal to 5 times Y. If 8 is subtracted from Y it is 10 more than two times X. What is the sum of X and Y ?

Solution

$$16X = 5Y$$

Also, $$Y - 8 = 2X + 10$$

=> $$Y - 2X = 10 + 8 = 18$$

=> $$\frac{16X}{5} - 2X = 18$$

=> $$\frac{16X - 10X}{5} = 18$$

=> $$6X = 18 \times 5 = 90$$

=> $$X = \frac{90}{6} = 15$$

=> $$Y = \frac{16}{5} \times 15$$

=> $$Y = 16 \times 3 = 48$$

$$\therefore X + Y = 15 + 48 = 63$$
