The GMAT syllabus for 2026 is built around three skills: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and data analysis. The current GMAT format, introduced as the redesigned GMAT Focus Edition, has 64 questions across three sections and takes 2 hours 15 minutes. Unlike the earlier version, the current GMAT format is shorter, with three 45-minute sections.
More than 7,700 graduate management programmes across 2,400+ universities and organisations in 110 countries use the GMAT as part of their selection process. In India, the GMAT is accepted by 190+ institutions, although acceptance varies by programme.
GMAT Syllabus 2026: Section-Wise Overview
The current GMAT Focus Edition has three sections with a total of 64 questions. The sections are separately timed, adaptive and scored on the same 60-90 scale.
Section | Questions | Main Areas |
Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | Arithmetic, Algebra |
Verbal Reasoning | 23 | Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning |
Data Insights | 20 | Data Sufficiency, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Multi-Source Reasoning, Two-Part Analysis |
Total | 64 | — |
The current exam also allows candidates to select their section order. At the end of each section, candidates can review questions and edit up to three answers, provided time remains.
Therefore, the GMAT Focus Edition is less about simply finishing questions and more about managing accuracy and time.
GMAT Free Mock Test helps candidates to understand their current GMAT score level and also how it compares to the scores achieved by classes at top business schools around the world.

GMAT Verbal Reasoning Syllabus 2026
The Verbal Reasoning section contains 23 questions in 45 minutes. It tests how well candidates understand written material, draw inferences and evaluate arguments. The two question types are Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning.
Reading Comprehension
RC passages can cover areas such as business, humanities, social sciences and science. Questions can test:
- Main idea
- Supporting ideas
- Inferences
- Logical relationships
- Application
- Logical structure
- Style and tone
- Development of an argument
A useful approach is to focus on the role of each paragraph rather than trying to memorise every sentence. The objective is to understand how the author's ideas connect and then use that structure to eliminate incorrect options.
Critical Reasoning
Critical Reasoning generally presents a short argument followed by a question. The questions can ask candidates to:
- Strengthen an argument
- Weaken an argument
- Identify a flaw
- Support or undermine a conclusion
- Evaluate a plan of action
- Draw a logical conclusion
There are no Sentence Correction questions in the current GMAT.
This makes reasoning more important than memorising grammar rules. For each argument, identify the conclusion, evidence and assumption before checking the answer choices.

GMAT Data Insights Syllabus 2026
The Data Insights section is one of the biggest changes from the earlier GMAT format. It contains 20 questions in 45 minutes and combines data analysis, quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning. An on-screen calculator is available during this section.
Question Type | What It Tests |
Data Sufficiency | Whether the information provided is sufficient to answer a question |
Multi-Source Reasoning | Combining information from text, tables and graphics |
Table Analysis | Sorting and analysing tabular data |
Graphics Interpretation | Reading graphs, charts and identifying relationships |
Two-Part Analysis | Solving problems involving two related tasks, trade-offs or relationships |
Data Sufficiency is not part of the current Quantitative Reasoning section; it appears within Data Insights.
Multi-Source Reasoning requires candidates to compare information across different sources. Table Analysis focuses on identifying data that meets specific conditions. Graphics Interpretation requires understanding trends, relationships and numerical information presented visually.
Two-Part Analysis can involve quantitative, verbal or mixed information. It may require solving simultaneous equations, evaluating trade-offs or identifying relationships between variables.

GMAT Exam Pattern 2026: Questions, Marks and Duration
The GMAT exam pattern has three separately timed sections, with 45 minutes allotted to each.
Section | Duration | Questions | Score Range |
Quantitative Reasoning | 45 minutes | 21 | 60–90 |
Verbal Reasoning | 45 minutes | 23 | 60–90 |
Data Insights | 45 minutes | 20 | 60–90 |

GMAT Syllabus 2026: Important Topics and Preparation Tips
The current format rewards a preparation strategy that combines concept building with timed practice. GMAT Focus Edition preparation should therefore be based on the three-section format rather than older GMAT study material.
Build the Quant foundation first
Start with Arithmetic and Algebra before moving to mixed-level questions. Track recurring errors in percentages, ratios, equations, inequalities and number properties.
Since Quant does not allow a calculator, practice solving calculations without depending on one.
Treat Verbal as reasoning practice
For RC, practise identifying the main idea, author's purpose and logical structure. For CR, focus on the relationship between evidence and conclusion.
Avoid spending excessive time trying to understand every unfamiliar topic. The information required to answer the question is provided in the passage.
Give Data Insights separate preparation time
Data Insights should not be treated as an extension of Quant. It requires comfort with tables, charts, multiple information sources and data sufficiency.
Practising different formats can make it easier to switch between numerical and verbal reasoning within the same section.
Use timed practice after completing concepts
Free GMAT mock tests can help establish a baseline before full-length preparation begins. Record your sectional scores, time spent and questions left unanswered after every test.
Do not judge a mock only by the total score. If you got a strong Quant score but weak Data Insights performance, you need a different preparation plan from someone with balanced section scores.
Add sectional practice to the weekly schedule
GMAT sectional tests are useful for improving 45-minute endurance without taking the time required for a complete mock.
Analyse rather than simply count attempts
After every test, divide questions into three groups:
- Correct and confident
- Correct but uncertain
- Incorrect or left unanswered
Check whether the problem came from a concept gap, calculation error, misreading, poor option elimination or time pressure. This creates a clearer preparation plan than simply increasing the number of questions attempted.
