Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania and was formed by volcanic eruptions over millions of years. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and the highest free-standing mountain above sea level in the world. The mountain is made up of three cones: Shira, Kibo, and Mawenzi. Geologists believe that Shira, the oldest cone, erupted about 2.5 million years ago, and Kibo and Mawenzi erupted about 1 million years ago. Kibo is the largest and tallest cone, and is technically dormant, meaning it could erupt again.
