Question 48

Which of the following statements is/are true or false?
Statements:
A) On moving from left to right in a period, the chemical reactivity of elements first decreases and then increases.
B) The chemical reactivity of non-metals increases on going down in a group of the periodic table.

Solution

A) On moving from left to right in a period, the chemical reactivity of elements first decreases and then increases. Number of valence electrons is very less at the left , so it is chemically reactive. On moving from left to right , number of valence electrons increases , reactivity decreases. While at the right end , elements need to gain one or two electrons to achieve inert gas configuration, so the reactivity decreases. So , this statement is true.

B)The chemical reactivity of non-metals increases on going down in a group of the periodic table. Fluorine is the most electronegative element and negativity negativity decreases on going down in a group. This statement is false.

So , the answer would be option a) Statement A is true, but B is false.
