In the question given below two statements are given which are grammatically correct and meaningful. Connect them by choosing the word given below the statements in the best possible way without changing the intended meaning. Choose the best possible word as your answer accordingly from the options to form a correct, coherent sentence.
(I) The unemployment rate has dropped sharply this quarter.
(II) It may only be temporary.
The correct answer is option C $$\rightarrow$$ The unemployment rate has dropped sharply this quarter, though it may be only temporary.
Option A, 'but', which is another good choice, is not as good as 'though'. The word 'though' is used to contrast two clauses when the second clause is dependent on the first. The use of the word 'but' implies a degree of certainty that is contradicted in the use of the word 'may', implying that there is no assurance as to whether or not the outcome mentioned in II will be the case.
Options B and D fail to capture the contrast as well as the other two options. Option C is the correct answer.
