Two vans X and Y start from the same point. X travels 5 km West, then turns to its left and travels 3 km. Y travels 13 km South, then turns West and travels 5 km, then turns to its left and travels 7 km. Where is Y with respect to X now?
Solution
Let the two vans X and Y start from the same point S. X (red) travels 5 km West, then turns to its left and travels 3 km to finally stop at U. Y (black) travels 13 km South to reach R, then turns West and travels 5 km, finally turns to its left and travels 7 km towards south to stop at point P.
=> PU = $$(13-3)+7=17$$ km
$$\therefore$$ Y is 17 km south with respect to X now.
