The question does make it clear that R is on the right side as there are 4 people to his right and 10 people between R and D.
Hence, there are 15 people to the right of D.
So if x is the rank of D from left, 40 = x + 5 + 10 =>x= 25
So, there are 24 people to D's left. ie D is 25th from the left.
