Solution
Let the army recruit starts from point A and runs 2 km East to B, then 3 km South to reach C, then 5.5 km West to reach point D, then 4 km North, and finally 3.5 km East to stop at point D.
=> AF = $$4-3=1$$ km
$$\therefore$$ Now he is 1 km north with reference to the starting position.
