Solution
The river starts from town A and flows 37 miles South to reach X, then it turns West and flows 23 miles to reach Y, then it turns North and flows 40 miles to point Z, then it turns to its right and flows 23 miles eastwards to finally reach town B.
$$\therefore$$ Town A is 3 miles south with respect to town B.
