Study the following table carefully and answer the given questions. The number of various crimes, as supplied by national crime record, reported in different states in the year 2012-13

Find the approximate average of murder and theft in all the eight states together.

Solution

Total murders in all the states together

= 132 + 125 + 56 + 354 + 173 + 764 + 261 + 252 = 2117

=> Average = $$\frac{2117}{8} = 264.625$$

Total thefts in all the states together

= 265 + 216 + 53 + 12224 + 252 + 675 + 257 + 278 = 14220

=> Average = $$\frac{14220}{8} = 1777.5$$

$$\therefore$$ Required average = $$\frac{264.625 + 1777.5}{2}$$

= $$1021.06 \approx 1021$$
