Question 3

A child of mass 5 kg is going round a merry-go-round that makes 1 rotation in 3.14 s. The radius of the merry-go-round is 2 m. The centrifugal force on the child will be

Given: mass $$m = 5\;\text{kg}$$, time period $$T = 3.14\;\text{s}$$, radius $$r = 2\;\text{m}$$.

The angular velocity is:

$$ \omega = \frac{2\pi}{T} = \frac{2\pi}{3.14} = 2\;\text{rad/s} $$

The centrifugal force (centripetal force in magnitude) on the child is:

$$ F = m\omega^2 r = 5 \times (2)^2 \times 2 = 5 \times 4 \times 2 = 40\;\text{N} $$

The centrifugal force on the child is 40 N.
