firstly, we have 21 small squares

and now , ABED,BCEF,DEGH,EFIH,GHJK,HIKL,JKNM,KLON,UTQR are 4 X4 squares =9

Lets locate 3 X 3 squares.

ABCIHG,GHIONM,DEFLKJ =3

So, the total squares are 21+9+3= 33

Hence answer is option D
