Question 16

A man starts walking from a place X and reaches the place Y in 12 hours. He travels 3/7th of the total distance at the speed of 3 km/hr and the remaining distance at the speed of 4 km/hr. What is the distance (in km) between X and Y?

Solution

Let total distance between X and Y = $$7d$$ km

=> Distance travelled at the speed of 3 km/hr = $$\frac{3}{7}\times7d=3d$$ km

Thus, distance travelled at the speed of 4 km/hr = $$7d-3d=4d$$ km

Total time taken = 12 hours

Using, time = distance/speed

=> $$\frac{3d}{3}+\frac{4d}{4}=12$$

=> $$d+d=2d=12$$

=> $$d=\frac{12}{2}=6$$

$$\therefore$$ Total distance between X and Y = $$7\times6=42$$ km

=> Ans - (D)
