IIM Bangalore (IIMB) has announced a significant grant from the Tata Trusts, marking an important step in the growth of a world-class Undergraduate School in Bengaluru. The grant will directly support the institute’s long-term academic vision, campus design and overall plan for excellence in higher education in India. This commitment reflects a shared belief that strong support at an early stage can shape the future of an institution and the students it serves.
A Landmark Grant That Shapes the Future
The grant from the Tata Trusts is one of the most important contributions to the IIM Bangalore undergraduate Programme. It will help the institute move closer to its goal of offering high-quality education that matches global standards. The support is not just about money. It is about building a strong base for learning, research and growth that will benefit students for many years to come.
The idea behind this support comes from a simple belief: the most lasting investment a philanthropic organisation can make is in knowledge and in the people who carry it forward. The Tata Trusts have long backed institutions that are academically strong and closely linked to India’s development. By supporting IIMB at this stage, the Trusts hope to help shape an institution of real character and ambition.
What the Grant Will Support
The grant will be used to develop world-class academic and residential facilities for the new undergraduate campus. These facilities are designed to give students a comfortable and inspiring place to study, live and grow. Good infrastructure plays a key role in learning, and this support makes it possible to build spaces that encourage focus, creativity and teamwork.
Beyond buildings, the grant will help create new research clusters in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems and applied business learning. These areas are important because they prepare students to work in a fast-changing, data-driven world. The funding will also strengthen IIMB’s effort to build a dedicated faculty team drawn from many different subjects. With strong teachers and modern research tools, students will be able to learn from some of the best minds in their fields.
A New School for Undergraduate Studies
The new School of Undergraduate Studies is located about 27 kilometres from IIMB’s main campus. It was planned as part of the institute’s wider vision to bring the same academic rigour and global outlook from its postgraduate and executive programmes into undergraduate education.
The school will begin with two four-year, full-time residential programmes: a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science, and a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics. Both programmes start in August this year. The curriculum brings together data science, economics and business studies into one connected framework. It is designed to prepare students for a complex, data-driven market.
The first batch will have a small group of 80 students, with 40 in each stream. This small size allows focused learning, personal attention and close mentorship. The goal is not only to teach technical skills but also to help young minds ask better questions, understand complex ideas and lead with evidence.
Words From the Leaders
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Noel Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, said the Trusts have supported some of India’s most defining institutions for over a century, including the Tata Memorial Hospital and the Indian Institute of Science. He noted that this grant reflects the same instinct: to back institutions of lasting value at an early, formative stage, when support can shape not just a building or a budget but the very character and ambition of an institution.
Welcoming the grant, Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIM Bangalore, said that transformative support of this kind is essential for setting an institute of national importance firmly on a path of global leadership. He added that IIMB is committed to nurturing talent at the undergraduate level and building a pipeline of thinkers who can engage with the challenges of a data-driven world.
Reflecting on the partnership, Mr. Siddharth Sharma, CEO, Tata Trusts, said the Trusts seek to support efforts that are ambitious in vision yet grounded in real needs. Backing IIMB as it extends its tradition of academic excellence to undergraduate education, he said, reflects their belief that investing in knowledge and in the people who will shape India’s future is among the most meaningful things they can do.
Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, Director-in-charge, IIM Bangalore, said the programmes are designed to give students strong technical skills while also helping them interpret complexity and lead with evidence. The support from the Tata Trusts, he added, allows the institute to invest deeply in faculty, research infrastructure and campus environment, building a learning ecosystem focused on India’s developmental priorities and global standards.
Looking Ahead With Confidence
This grant is more than a one-time gift. It marks the start of a long and meaningful partnership between the Tata Trusts and IIM Bangalore. Together, they aim to build a place of learning that stands among the best in the world. The support will help shape not just classrooms and labs, but also the dreams and futures of many students.
As IIMB prepares to welcome its first undergraduate batch, it remains focused on its core values of academic rigour, research strength and global outlook. With this strong foundation now in place, the institute is ready to begin an exciting new chapter. The journey ahead is full of promise, and this landmark grant ensures that it begins on a strong and hopeful note.
