RBI Assistants can become a grade-A officer through internal promotion. Then, they can become grade RBI Grade-B officer. The exam pattern is fairly similar to the IBPS and SBI exams. RBI conducts the exam in 3 phases - prelims, mains and language proficiency test.

Aspirants must fall between the 20-28 years age bracket (General Category).
Applicants must at least be a graduate.
Also, applicants must have good proficiency in the regional language.

RBI conducts the exam in 3 phases - prelims, mains and language proficiency test.
The pattern of the prelims exam is same as that of other banking exams such as IBPS PO and SBI PO. There are 3 sections - English language, Reasoning ability and Numerical ability. The English language section contains 30 questions of one mark. The other 2 sections contain 35 questions of 1 mark each.
It is mandatory for candidates to be proficient in the local language. RBI reserves the right to disqualify the candidates who are not proficient in the local language. Hence, aspirants must avoid applying at other zones.
RBI Assistant Prelims is an online multiple-choice question (MCQ) examination of 1 hour duration.

1/4 marks will be penalized for every wrong answer.
Language Proficiency Test (LPT) - The candidates provisionally shortlisted from the main on-line examination will have to undergo a language proficiency test (LPT). The language proficiency test will be conducted in the Official / Local Language of the State concerned as detailed below. Candidate not proficient in the Official / Local Language shall be disqualified.
"Assistants will draw a starting basic pay of ₹ 14,650/- per month (i.e. ₹ 13,150/- plus two advance increments admissible to Graduates) in the scale of ₹ 13150 - 750(3) - 15400 - 900(4) - 19000 - 1200(6) - 26200 - 1300(2) - 28800 -1480(3) - 33240 - 1750(1) - 34990 (20 years) and other allowances, viz. Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance, Transport Allowance etc., as admissible from time to time. At present, initial monthly Gross emoluments for Assistants approximately ₹ 36091/-."
